With the advent of the iPhone Fold arriving in 2026

Apple is now planning to Split it’s iPhone release dates starting in 2027

A recent report from a Korean supply chain suggests that Apple may not launch the standard version of the iPhone 18 (tentative name) in the upcoming year. Following plans to introduce a foldable iPhone, Apple appears to have reorganized its product lineup and shifted the release timeline for the standard iPhone model. Industry insiders indicate that the standard model of Apple's next iPhone series, the iPhone 18 (tentative name), is now slated for release in the first half of 2027. According to multiple sources familiar with Apple's strategy, the company intends to unveil the entry-level iPhone "e-model" and the standard model together in the first half of each year, while reserving the second half for four additional models, including its premium foldable device. For now, however, the standard model's release has been temporarily set back. This adjustment stems from the introduction of the foldable iPhone into Apple’s portfolio next year. As this groundbreaking foldable device joins the lineup alongside other flagship models planned for the latter half of 2024, the standard model release window has been pushed forward to future years. Specifically, Apple's decision shifts the standard model's launch into 2027, instead of coinciding with the introduction of foldable technology next year. To summarize, Apple's release cadence for 2024 includes launching the iPhone 17e in the first half of the year, followed by the iPhone 18 Air, Pro, Pro Max, and foldable phone in the second half. By 2027, this strategy will evolve to incorporate six models annually, as both the standard and entry-level devices make their debut earlier in the year. This adjusted roadmap reflects Apple's intent to optimize iPhone sales by further diversifying its product lineup. By expanding release windows and   introducing new form factors such as foldable phones alongside entry-level models, Apply aims to ensure that each product category stands out and maximizes market appeal.

The Next Chapter for Apple: A Split iPhone Release Strategy

The landscape of the smartphone industry is on the cusp of a significant shift, and Apple is reportedly at the center of it. With the highly anticipated launch of the "iPhone Fold" in 2026, the tech giant is now rumored to be completely overhauling its traditional, annual product release schedule. This strategic pivot, which would see Apple split its iPhone launches into two distinct windows starting in 2027,

marks a fundamental change in how the company approaches its most important product line.

For over a decade, Apple has followed a predictable, highly successful cadence: a major keynote event in September, where a new lineup of iPhones is unveiled and released in quick succession. This model has served the company well, generating immense consumer excitement and record-breaking sales in the crucial holiday quarter. However, as the iPhone family has grown in complexity and scope, from the standard models to the Pro, Pro Max, and now, a new "Air" and "e" lineup, a single launch window is no longer sufficient.

The arrival of the iPhone Fold is the catalyst for this change. Expected to be a premium, high-end device with a price tag of around $2,000, the foldable iPhone will be a new top-tier offering. To accommodate this device and to better manage its expanding product portfolio, Apple is said to be implementing a new two-pronged strategy.

The Fall Focus: Pro and Foldable

Beginning in the fall of 2026, the yearly September event will be dedicated to Apple's most premium and innovative devices. This is where we can expect to see the latest generation of the iPhone Pro, Pro Max, and the debut of the iPhone Fold. By positioning these devices in the pre-holiday season, Apple can maximize sales during this lucrative period. The focus will be on cutting-edge technology, with rumors suggesting the iPhone 18 Pro will feature a smaller "pinhole" cutout for the front camera and under-display Face ID. The iPhone Fold, with its creaseless display and multi-display functionality, would serve as a powerful statement of Apple's technological prowess and its entry into the nascent, but growing, foldable market.

The Spring Refresh: Standard and Entry-Level

The second part of this new strategy would take effect in the spring of 2027. This is when Apple will reportedly release its more mainstream and budget-friendly iPhones. This release could include the standard iPhone 18 and a new, more affordable "iPhone 18e." This second launch window would allow Apple to maintain consumer interest and sales momentum throughout the year, rather than having it peak and then wane after the fall event. It also gives Apple the flexibility to release a broader range of products without overwhelming the supply chain or diluting the marketing message.

Strategic Implications

This shift to a biannual release cycle is a bold move with several strategic implications.

  1. Market Diversification: A split release allows Apple to target different consumer segments at different times of the year. The fall launch caters to early adopters and power users willing to pay a premium for the latest technology, while the spring launch appeals to a wider audience looking for a more affordable or standard upgrade.

  1. Supply Chain Management: With an ever-growing number of models and new technologies like the foldable display, a staggered release can help Apple better manage its global supply chain. It would alleviate the pressure of manufacturing all new devices simultaneously and could help avoid the kind of production delays that have plagued some past iPhone launches.

  1. Maintaining a Continuous Narrative: By having two major iPhone launches a year, Apple can keep the conversation and media attention on its products all year long. This would create a continuous upgrade cycle, enticing consumers to consider a new device outside of the typical fall schedule.
  2. While this new strategy presents opportunities, it also carries risks. The primary concern is the potential for consumer confusion. A lineup of six or more different iPhones, released at different times, could make the purchasing decision more complex for the average consumer. Apple will have to be very clear in its marketing to differentiate its various models and explain the new release cadence. However, if Apple successfully navigates this transition, the split release could mark the beginning of a new era for the iPhone, one that is more diverse, more dynamic, and more in tune with the diverse needs of the global smartphone market.
